THIRTY-FIVE Cat Islanders received certificates from the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute on Saturday and were urged by Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade to continue striving for excellence.
Mr Greenslade, who was the keynote speaker at the commencement exercise, congratulated the students for having the courage to enter the programme, complete their course and for remaining in Cat island to contribute to their communities.
The commencement exercise was the second for BTVI in Cat Island, where the idea for the first satellite programme was hashed.
Similar programmes were subsequently launched on other islands, Mr Greenslade said.
The Programme in Cat Island is supported by the Cat Island Sailing Club and the Cat Island Development Association. Mr Greenslade made a personal donation to both groups.
Jasmaine Russell, 22, said she entered BTVI's programme in order to give herself a better chance of getting permanent employment with the government. She is currently employed with BTC under the government's 52-week job training programme.
"Technology is the way to the world," she said. "I currently do hair and I wanted to explore more, so I said let me give it a shot."
She finished top of her class.
