WHILE some of our elite athletes were at home competing in the Silver Lightning's Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Classic at Thomas A Robinson Stadium on Saturday, quarter-miler Michael Mathieu was holding his own at the Donovan Bailey Invitational in Canada.

Fresh off setting a new national record in the event in his last meet, Mathieu came from behind running out of lane six to win the race in 20.40 seconds.

He's now preparing to come home for the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations' Scotiabank National Open Track and Field Championships this weekend.

The Grand Bahamian native will come in with the fastest times in both the 200 and 400.

However, it's yet to be seen which of the two he will concentrate on, although at last year's IAAF World Championships his focus was on the 200 where he ran in the same semifinal heat with American Usain Bolt before he pulled up and had to withdraw from the race.
