A MAN was shot at and fought off an armed raider who he thinks may have been one of the rapists police are hunting.

As police continue their investigation into multiple rapes across New Providence, the man told The Tribune how he fought off an intruder at around 4am on Saturday.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, says he was lucky to be alive after getting into a fight with a man attempting to crawl through the bedroom window of one of his female roommates.

He said: “I live with four women and I heard screams coming from one of the bedrooms.

“I ran in the room and saw a man coming through the window with his left hand on the desk and he had a pistol in his right hand.

“Without thinking, I rushed toward him. He raised the gun in my direction and at that point I thought I was going to die.

“I froze and braced myself for the impact.

“The man fired at me but he missed. I got to him and we fought.

“After struggling with him for about a minute and two he tried to shot me again. After he saw that I was not giving up and he was not going to get into the department.

“He gave up and left through the window. I gathered everyone in one room and called the police.”

The man said he walked away with a few cuts and bruises but he is more concerned about the safety of the public.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson said police received a number of calls in relation to the armed robberies and rapes and are following significant leads. However, ACP Ferguson said police could still use more help from the public.

He said: “The police are doing what they are supposed to do but we are still asking members of the public who may have any information to come forward.

“A little bit of information can go a long way. We got some support from the public but we could always use more.”
