Boomer G Angels take 2-1 series lead

WITH floor general Latoya Thompson limited by a nagging groin injury, the defending champions now find themselves facing a deficit in the New Providence Women's Basketball Association (NPWBA) best-of-five championship series.

The Boomer G Angels dominated game three to take a 58-40 win over the Four J's Cheetahs at DW Davis gym on Saturday night.

The Angels moved ahead to take a 2-1 series lead after dropping game one.

Suzette McKenzie finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, Ashley Moss added eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, Malesha Peterson finished with nine points, while Sharelle Cash chipped in with eight. Christine Sinclair led the Cheetahs with 16 points while Alyse Dean added six.

The Cheetahs' offense struggled to find continuity all game with just eight assists and shot a paltry 25 per cent from the field. They managed just 10 per cent (1-10) from beyond the three-point arch and 56 per cent (9-16) from the free throw line. The Angels shot 42 per cent from the field, including 33 per cent (5-15) from the three-point line.

The Angels led nearly wire to wire and jumped out to an early 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cheetahs' last lead in the game came early in the first quarter but a go-ahead basket by Cash gave the Angels the lead for the rest of the way. The won the second quarter with a 27-18 lead into the half.

The third quarter proved all but sealed the game for Boomer G when they outscored Four J's 18-9 and took a 45-27 lead into the fourth.

The lead reached as much as 22 in the final period on a fastbreak layup by Diasti Delancy for a 52- 30 lead midway through the fourth.

The Angels scored 36 points in the paint while the Cheetahs scored just 22. They had a 10-point advantage in points off turnovers with 24.

Game three is all set for Tuesday night at DW Davis.
