Advert ordered off the air

THE Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority has ordered ZNS to remove a political ad that suggested PLP Fox Hill candidate Fred Mitchell was involved in an alleged visa scandal at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to URCA, the TV spot has been removed until May 4. In the meantime, the regulator is expected to investigate the matter further to ensure the ad does not cause serious or irreparable damage to Mr Mitchell.

Yesterday, Mr Mitchell said he wished to highlight that in no way, shape or form did he condone the content of the ad.

"The ad is in fact untruthful but there is a narrow distinction and a legal one between untruthfulness and defamation. It is the defamatory aspect only on which I complained.

"The FNM's political commentary, while untruthful, is their commentary, and people will treat it with the contempt it deserves. I thank (attorney) Raynard Rigby for his work on this matter.

"An action has been filed in the courts against the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas for defamation and they are to be served shortly. I am pleased at these interim steps to recover the damage done to my reputation," he said.
