TOMORROW, Abaco's first annual Special Olympics Torch Run will be held in Marsh Harbour with a 9 am start.

The six-mile route will begin at the airport roundabout and end at the park at the Abaco Central High School.

The US Embassy is lending its support to the event, represented by LTJG Karin Evelyn of the US Coast Guard, who will lead off the first leg of the law enforcement relay, taking the Special Olympics torch for the first two miles of the route through the streets of downtown Marsh Harbour.

The inaugural torch run race is expected to attract 80 participants including law enforcement officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), representatives from the business community and students from Every Child Counts (ECC), the island's special needs school which provides an alternative education for children with learning, developmental or physical disabilities.

"The US Embassy remains committed to raising awareness about the challenges facing people with disabilities and is pleased to once again partner with Special Olympics Bahamas and the scores of local volunteers and financial supporters who assist the inspirational athletes in realising their dreams," said the embassy in a statement.
