ALTHOUGH her career, like her age, is still young, some music observers are already comparing to her the next Rihanna, which is good news for Bahamian pop princess Angelique Sabrina, who is slowly establishing herself as a pop powerhouse.
The music video for her new single "Pull Up" premiered exclusively on MTV Buzzworthy yesterday. MTV Buzzworthy is the place where emerging or underrepresented artists have the opportunity to have their videos premiered online.
For the 14-year-old singer this marks a major milestone in her career. With "Pull Up" premiering on MTV she said her music is exposed to a wider audience making the transition from an island artist to an international artist much easier.
"We showed the video to MTV and it is not likely for them to be interested in an independent artist. They thought the video was great. They said it was young and fresh. I am really excited that a mega source for music such as MTV is interested in me," she said.
Angelique's single "Pull Up" is set against an island pop beat and is gaining airplay on the several radio stations.
The video for "Pull Up" was shot in Los Angeles under the direction of Skee TV's The Game, T-Pain and Fernando Cordero of Industrial Films.
In the video Angelique is teleported from the streets of her native home town to Hollywood Boulevard, amongst the stars. There she meets up with friends, who join her for a street performance of the new "Pull Up" dance, coined by Angelique. They also hit the sandy sea shores, where the festivities continue.
"BET is also interested in the video for Pull Up. There is so much that is going on right now and it is happening very quickly. I am ready for the ride though," Angelique told In Ya Ear.
Today Angelique heads to Barbados for a school tour. There she will perform several of her singles and make stops at media houses in Barbados.
Although Angelique's has a lot on her to-do list, her attention is also focused on finishing her first album.
"We are about six singles deep. We are still in the early stages and I am still doing more recording. I am excited about it because it is going to be a mix of island and pop flavours," Angelique said.
Angelique was recently selected as the number one artist in Sydney, Australia's Top 5 Rising Star Countdown. She took advantage of the election fever performing for huge crowds at the political rallies.
"This experience was very fun. The songs that I performed were not songs that I had released but people were still very receptive and they enjoyed it. That was so amazing because I have never performed for huge crowds like I did during the rallies," she said.
Angelique has also hit the studio with Grammy award-winning producers such as Rockwilder and Hennessy. The artist is also forming a relationship with R&B artist Shontelle.
