First of all, I think this is a case of lazy journalism. It seems to me as if she saw one or two areas, got a few "tourist oriented" comments, maybe looked up some old info from the 50s and then made the rest up herself after returning from her afternoon junket.
We are politically part of the Caribbean, but not geographically, and certainly not at its heart. I don't know of any group of people living a bare substistence lifestyle and gathering straw and scrap wood off the beach to build a hut to live in, except perhaps a few newly arrived Haitian boat people.
We have a thriving middle class and the majority of our homes are of construction standards that outstrip many areas in the US. After Andrew, in 1992, people were sent HERE to study our building code and started using hurricane clips and steel reinforced columns in homes in Florida. She makes us sound like some impoverished third world country with people who are either dirt poor or filthy rich. It's no wonder American schools perform so poorly in Geography, History and Social Studies, if this is the example being set by so-called professionals!!! - Graham Thordarson
Vexing - One really cant believe everything that's written in travel magazines. Once on a course in Atlanta, some people actually thought that we, in the Bahamas lived in huts with coconut trees all around. They could not get over the fact that I spoke English well, nor could they conceive how I would make it from Atlanta to Miami by plane in less time it took them to commute home each evening. Probably read something by Nellie Day. - B Williams
