IN her article on the types of houses people live in, on www.travels.com, Nellie Day says the Bahamas 'can provide the perfect place to lay your roots and build your dream home - as long as you can afford the price tag that many luxury homes boast.'
"For many local Bahamians, however, life is less glamorous. The islands' ample working-class section often inhabits shacks and huts," she writes.
"Many Bahamians make their living farming or selling trinkets at the local straw markets," says the report.
"For the lower and lower-middle classes, small beach shacks and huts are home. The poorest Bahamians typically create makeshift homes out of straw or wood. These materials are abundant in the Bahamas, both at industrial and retail outlets and along the beach, where straw and wooden debris can usually be found. Some of the poverty-ridden also raid abandoned structures, stripping them of their wooden planks and other viable materials," she says.
The article says there is very little middle class in The Bahamas, but those 'who are considered middle class and upper-lower class typically create their homes from brick or concrete, which can withstand hurricanes much better than wood or straw can.'
"These structures may consist of simply one large room, or the area may be divided by makeshift dividers made from sheets, straw, wooden boards or beaded curtains. Those who have a little more money tend to build their homes out of concrete," says the report.
The report goes on: "The upper-middle and upper class population of the Bahamas tend to live in ample living quarters. Some construct large, multilevel mansions complete with outdoor swimming pools, columns and a private entrance, while others live in sprawling manors that contain massive fruit trees, balconies, guest homes and docks."
The Bahamas' upper class generally consists of wealthy government officials, real estate owners and developers, tourism officials, resort managers and businesspeople from Europe, Canada and the United States, says the report.

How this website could have someone that is so uninform about a country write an article, their probably just a want-to-be company in the first place not to proof read and verify and article before posting. On a side not a lot of Americans do think that everybody else in the world lives in straw huts and shacks, she is from Georgia so if she travel that state she would see real proverty in some areas.

I LMAO at just about every line she wrote in that article. "Straw huts", "beach shacks". At one point, it seemed as if she was talking about the story of the three little pigs, the way she mentioned straw, wood (sticks) and bricks so much. What beach can you go on in the Bahamas and see someone living in a "beach shack"? LOL. Poor Nellie, I almost feel bad for her, she really didn't know what she was getting herself into. She probably thought we didn't have internet either, where with us living in straw huts and all.

I taught in Freeport just a couple years ago and loved my time in The Bahamas. I laughed when I read the article because it seems like it was written as a joke, not a serious article. What is worse than the article is the website that allowed this garbage to be published. It seems like no one is willing to do any real research.

If her brain was as big as her teeth she may had known better. But the sad part is that in a couple of months she will place on her journalism resume that in May 2012 her writing was published internationally and she was able to double her Twitter followers in one day. That's the American way. Use every opportunity to exploit others. Kinda reminds me of a situation back home here.
We celebrate May 22, 2012 as the day that Nellie Day brought a divided nation back together, even if only for 24hrs.

You need to let your staff compose facts that proves Ms Day's portrayal of our Bahamaland is indeed false resulting in the posting of an apology to The Bahamas and a retraction to her false document. You guys may laugh and call her big teeth all you want but that is mainly read by only us Bahamians. For all the rest of the world cares who never visited The Bahamas and from her postings may never, what she said is good enough reason to affect our number one industry.
