BTC officials said yesterday they have restored cell phone services to Sandy Point Abaco.
While the majority of BTC’s telecommunications network is now operational, technicians were yesterday still working towards full restoration in two areas hardest hit by the Hurricane Sandy.
Residents in Sandy Point Abaco were without any service up until Tuesday afternoon due to extensive damage to BTC’s equipment in that area.
Damage assessments revealed that extensive flooding in the plant caused a number of issues. Plant batteries, which supply power, were destroyed and the backup generator was rendered inoperable. As a result of flood waters, all power had to be shut down to the building.
The 2G cellular equipment, which handles voice traffic, was extensively damaged.
The BDSNI equipment, the main communications link between Sandy Point and Marsh Harbour, was damaged. And the communications dish for Disney Cay was also extensively damaged when it fell from the tower.
A new DC plant was dispatched from New Providence on Monday and installed. Technicians were able to get some power restored yesterday. Efforts were still underway to restore landline service to the area.
