V8 Fusion Stingrays win opener 28-14

JAMAAL Storr picked up the 2012-13 season just as he ended last year, with a dominant performance en route to a win for the V8 Fusion Stingrays.

In a rematch of the 2012 Boil Fish Bowl, Storr scored two rushing touchdowns to lead the Stingrays to a 28-14 win over the Orry J Sands Pros to open the Commonwealth American Football League season at the DW Davis Gym on Sunday.

Storr scored the only touchdown of the opening half as the Stingrays took a 6-0 lead at the half.

Trailing 14-0, in the third quarter, Charles Edwards recovered a fumble in the end zone to put the Pros on the board for the first time and trailed 14-6. Storr would respond with his second touchdown run of the game for a 20-6 advantage.

The Pros would score on the ensuing possession when Mike Foster connected with Philip Moxey for a touchdown and a successful conversion to come within a single score, 20-14.

After a key stop for the defense, the Pros had an opportunity to tie or take the lead with just under three minutes left to play in the fourth, but the Stingrays defense came up with a timely pick-six to seal the win.

“Our line did a good job today, I just wanted to explode through the holes and I knew once I got out in the open floor they wouldn’t be able to stop me,” the reigning CAFL MVP said. “It’s just the first game but it was important to start the season off in the right way.”

In week two (begins Sunday, November 11), the Stingrays are slated to face the BailCo Jets at the DW Davis Field at 1:30pm.

“Last year, winning the championship for the first time, it meant so much to me and it meant so much to my team so we feel like we have to come out even better this year and be ready to defend,” Storr said. “It has been a long time coming, we worked hard for that, but we worked even harder this offseason and we wanted to set the tone from day one.”

The Jets seek to recover from the three straight championship game losses in 2008, 2009, 2010 and as well as their lackluster 2011 year.

The CAFL will also see the return of inter-island competition with the joining of another nostalgic football team of the 1970s.

The Freeport Hurricanes, in an attempt to bring the CAFL back to Grand Bahama after six years, are scheduled to play their first game in over 20 years against the Pros when they return to the field in week three (November 17 in Freeport, Grand Bahama).
