MACEDONIA and Golden Gates continued where they left off as the Baptist Sports Council’s defending champions, opening up the 2012 season on the winning note in the 19-and-under, co-ed and men’s divisions respectively at the Banker’s Field, Baillou Hills Sporting Complex, on Saturday.

In the 19-and-under division, Macedonia blanked Golden Gates 10-0 in an abbreviated three inning affair via the 10-run mercy rule. In the co-ed division, Golden Gates held off St Paul’s 7-5 and in the men’s encounter, Golden Gates doubled up St Paul’s 14-6.

Michael Ingraham fired a one-hitter with four strike outs and he helped his own cause with a double and a run scored to seal the win. Courtney Smith had a perfect 3-for-3 day with a home run and a pair of doubles, scoring three times, while Weymond Demeritte was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored and Akili Kemp was 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored.

Kejano Morley was the losing pitcher.

Golden Gates 7,

St Paul’s 5

Ken Wood and Ramon Johnson both were 2-for-3 with Wood ripping a two-run homer and a RBI triple, scoring twice, while Johnson had a pair of doubles with two RBI to lead Golden Gates’ co-ed to victory. Wood was also the winning pitcher.

Deval Storr had a RBI triple and scored a run to pace St Paul’s, whose losing pitcher was Harold ‘Banker’ Fritzgerald.

Richard Bain had a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, Garfield Bethel was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and Culbert ‘Buster’ Evans and Jordon Gibson both had a two-run homer, scoring twice to lead Golden Gates men.

Ken Wood Jr was the winning pitcher, helping his cause with a double, a RBI and two runs scored.

Edward Rolle doubled and walked, scoring twice and N’Komo Ferguson homered for St Paul’s. Brad Wood Jr was the losing pitcher.

The BSC is scheduled to continue its regular season with a full slate of games on two fields at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Saturday:

LEGENDS ALL-STAR GAME

THE Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture has released the names of the following players selected to participate in the Legends All-Star game on Saturday at the Archdeacon William Thompson Softball Park, Southern Recreation Grounds.

The game is scheduled for 1pm but the players are asked to report to the park at 12:30pm.

CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS ACTION

THE St Bede’s Crushers and Our Lady’s Blue Flames both won on Monday as the Catholic Diocesan Primary Schools continued its 2012 basketball league at Loyola Hall on Gladstone Road.

St Bede’s knocked off St Francis/Joseph Shockers 30-27 as Blaize Darling scored a game high 20 points. Adrian Curry scored 14 in a losing effort.

Our Lady’s, on the other hand, won over St Cecilia’s Strikers as Mateo Taylor had a game high 22 points. Daunte Smith and Sean Riley both had eight in a losing effort.

Today, as the league continues play with another double header, league coordinator Vanta Culmer will be celebrating her 41st birthday.

St Cecilia’s will play St Thomas More in the opener at 3:30pm. That will be followed by Xavier’s vs St Francis/Joseph.

BASKETBALL

NPBA ACTION

THE Royal Bahamas Police Force welcomed Jeremy Hutchinson to their line-up and the talented forward helped the Crimestoppers pull off a close 100-97 victory on Monday night over the Double R Services Limited Cleaners as the New Providence Basketball Association continued its regular season.

In the other game played at the CI Gibson Gymnasium, the Mail Boat Cybots cruised past the Bahamas Baptist College Lions 84-39.

Hutchinson, back in the league after taking a short break, scored 24 points with 13 rebounds and two steals to pace the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Carvin Cummings contributed 23 points with eight rebounds, Dario Seymour had 16 points, Vernon Stubbs was held to just 12 points with 15 rebounds. Kevin McPhee chipped in with eight points.

In a losing effort, Lenny Oscar scored a game high 35 points with 10 rebounds and five assists, Tamikmo KIing had 24 points with eight rebounds and four assists and Renardo Baillou finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds and six block shots.

Cybots 84, Lions 39

Eugene Bain scored 18 points with nine rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead the Mail Boat. Athmad Bootle and Jermaine Storr both scored 16, Garvin Lightbourne had 10 points and Robert Missick added nine.

For Bahamas Baptist College, Jominique Johnson scored a game high 19 points and the next best scorer was Antonio Hanna with nine.

NPBA action is slated to continue tonight with another double header on tap. In the opener at 7:30 pm, the College of the Bahamas Caribs will take on the Woodside Petroleum Conquerors and in the 9pm feature contest, the PJ Stingers will meet the BTC Digitals.
