12,000 living with HIV

ABOUT 12,000 Bahamians were living with HIV/AIDS in 2010, it was disclosed yesterday.

As World AIDS Day 2012 activities continue this month, officials say they hope to have up-to-date statistics ready for release in the next few weeks.

Activities continue today with the fifth annual HIV Testing and Blood Bank Donation at the College of The Bahamas.

Starting at 9:30am and ending at 4pm today at COB, the testing and blood drive launch a range of activities that will go on for the rest of the month, sponsored by The Ministry of Health and the HIV/AIDS Centre.

Until November 21, HIV Prevention signs and posters also will be distributed to schools and clinics throughout the Bahamas followed by a World AIDS Day Book Project Initiative from November 26 to December 7.

On November 27 a school assembly for World AIDS Day will be held at D W Davis Junior High school starting at 9:30am and then on November 29, a World AIDS Day church service will begin at 1pm at St Agnes Church on Baillou Hill Road.

November 30 will see the formation of a human red ribbon at Thomas A Robinson Stadium from 9:30am to 11:30am followed by a Know Your Status Day Lunch from noon to 30pm at the Royal Victoria Gardens.

Prime Minister Perry Christie will make a World AIDS Day Proclamation on December 1 and the World AIDS Day Walk will also take place that day at 6am from Arawak Cay to Cable Beach’s Sheraton Hotel and back to Arawak Cay.
