NOMINATIONS are open for the 2012 Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award, which recognises the work of Bahamians to promote human welfare and dignity.

In preparation for the 49th Annual Heart Ball, where the award has been presented since 1968, the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation and the Heart Ball Committee is accepting nominations, which should be accompanied by a letter or statement explaining why the person recommended should receive the award.

Well known educator Marjorie W T Davis received the 2011 award for her selfless efforts to improve the lives of others as a Girl Guides supporter, Zonta Club member and model citizen.

“The nomination of Ms Davis stood out as a reflection of what we look for in a Golden Heart Award winner. The award is presented to a person who gives of themselves, selflessly for the betterment of their fellow man,” said R E Barnes, chairman of the Heart Foundation.

In addition to Ms Davis, recent winners of award include: Lady Camille Barnett, M. Lowell Mortimer, Ms Mary Profilo and Dr Donald Gerace.

“The qualities desired in a nominee is that the individual works to better their fellow men. They can work with institutions or by taking up challenges on their own. But the point is that they better their fellow men without looking for a reward,” said Mr Barnes.

“There are worthy people out there who deserve acknowledgment for their contributions. It is the people’s award; the nominations come from the public. It is non-governmental,” he said.

Submissions for the 2012 Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award can be hand delivered to Grosham Property, Cable Beach. This is the office site for The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation. The deadline for nominations is Friday, January 18, 2013. For more information visit sassoonheartfoundation.org or call 327-0806.
