THE Queen’s College Comets could not have scripted a better start to their Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools’ senior boys’ basketball season, delivering a dominant performance and announcing their presence as title contenders.

Four Comets reached double figures in a 79-43 blowout win at home over the Jordan Prince William Falcons yesterday.

Ellison Greenslade led all scorers with 17 points, Lerecus Armbrister finished with 15 and Dominique Bethel added 14.

D’Mitry Charlton controlled the paint on both ends of the floor with six points and seven blocks.

QC led wire to wire after a hot shooting first quarter when they jumped out to a 36-12 lead.

After winning a championship in the junior division with Adderley, Charlton and Bethel as the focal points, Comets head coach Dwayne Smith said the ceiling is high for his team this year with the proper approach to each game.

“We’re looking to win a championship. Last year in their first senior years we came up short making the playoffs. I told them what they did in junior the year before doesn’t carry over, you have to work even harder when you get to this level,” he said.

“They have improved, more mental toughness and they play more together rather than playing by themselves. I just want them not to get complacent and to keep their mental toughness and we should be fine.”

The Comets will go as far as Daejour Adderley takes them and the lead guard looked poised in his senior division debut.

Adderley, who also added six assists, said his experience this summer on the BBF’s Centrobasket U-15 team was the key to his preparation headed into this season.

“It showed me a lot more things that I can do, and it allowed me to work on my game and I tried to enhance it, so I think my all around game is better now,” he said. “It really helped me to improve on my ballhandling, shooting off the dribble and my jumpshot, so I’m ready to go this year.”

Adderley, who averaged 10.8 points and 2.2 assists in the tournament where the Bahamas finished with a bronze medal, echoed his high expectations for this Comets team.

“I think we can be very good this year once we keep playing hard and execute our offense. I think it’s the same thing as the junior, the game is not much different, we just have to keep focused,” he said.

Armbrister, Adderley’s backcourt teammate, said after missing the playoffs last year, the Comets were determined to improve and have their sights set on a senior boys title.

“We improved on defense a lot, for us to be better we just have to execute, make the right plays and listen to the coaching staff. Personally, I need to improve on my passing and stop turning the ball over so much, but as a team we all just have to put in the work,” he said.

“I think we could go all the way, if we keep doing what we worked on so far and work hard, anything is possible through God, so I’m looking for us to be one the best teams this year.”

Cameron Cherry led the Falcons with 13 points, while Randy McFall and Sherrad Stevens each finished with eight.

The Comets are scheduled to travel to face the NCA Crusaders on Wednesday while the Falcons are slated to host the Kingsway Academy Saints.
