INCREASED resort accommodations on Eleuthera should help to attract more airlift to the island, its Chamber of Commerce president telling Tribune Business yesterday that limited access has been a major challenge.

Thomas Sands said recent announcements of major development/resort projects on the island should bode well for its economy and boost the profile of the destination as a whole.

“One of the major challenges that Eleuthera has faced over the years is airlift, and in many instances we are advised by the airlines that they need to see more hotel rooms constructed and operating before they commit the aircraft,” Mr Sands said.

“I believe all these resort projects will increase the number of rooms available, which will then in turn help to increase airlift - and more affordable airlift - into central Eleuthera, which will also impact the attraction of the island.

“Some have told me it costs them just as much to fly from Florida to Eleuthera as it does to fly from Canada to Eleutehra. You have price points of where it is costing someone from the west c0ast $500-$600 to get to Eleutehra, with only one option per day. The availability of more flights, larger flights and better price points will make a significant impact on the island.”

Mr Sands added that recent announcements such as the $30 million Cove Eleuthera Resort, the $12 million French Leave Marina Village by the Shaner Group, as well as the Urgo Hotels/Coco Di Mama’s joint venture with the Symonettes, should turn the Eleuthera economy in a positive direction.

“I think it all gives a very positive indication for the economy of Eleuthera as a whole. The south is still without any kind of announcement except the clinic, which is truly welcomed. We look forward to that spreading to the rest of the island. Ideally it would be great to have things happening in all areas of the island,” said Mr Sands.

“I think it’s all very positive public relations, and of course, we still have to see the follow through and the movement forward. The economy today is still slow. There are people who are hurting, businesses and local persons. There is a sense of desperation for jobs. Again, the recent announcements give some hope for the future that these projects are coming on. I think it will bode well for Eleuthera. We are grateful to see some things happening for Eleuthera in a positive way.”

Mr Sands said the new developments will drive Eleuthera businesses to upgrade their operations in preparation for the additional visitors to come. He also reiterated calls for concessions and incentives to be granted to Family Island businesses.
