Police urge caution for holiday season

POLICE say that although there is no evidence to suggest an increase in crime during the holiday season, they still warn Bahamians to be on the alert for opportunities of which criminals can take advantage.

In recent weeks, Bahamians have reported to the press having their jewellery stolen while they were wearing it or having their cars or houses broken into – with some of them attributing the crimes to the coming holiday season.

When asked if there is a noted increase in thefts and other similar crimes during the holiday, Supt Stephen Dean said yesterday: “No. We have nothing empirical to suggest that... (But) the opportunity exists - it’s more opportunity. Once the opportunity exists, there’s crime.”

He explained people can sometimes become vulnerable and “let down their guard” giving criminals the chance to take advantage.

Inspector Chrislyn Skippings echoed Supt Dean’s statements and explained that Bahamians should regularly be on the alert.

“I wouldn’t say an increase in thefts, but I would encourage persons to pay attention to their surroundings, always be on the alert, (and) look out for suspicious people, vehicles,” she said. “You find incidents occur because the opportunity presents itself and so we’re asking people to be on the alert.”

She also warned Bahamians to be careful of who they discuss their finances with and to call police if they notice anything suspicious or even “get a feeling” that something could go wrong.

“If you see something or you get a feeling that something could go wrong – people refer to it as a “gut-feeling” – call us. Just be on the alert, because most of the crimes are crimes of opportunity,” she said.
