Tree light-up starts Christmas festivities

Despite the rain, hundreds of people gathered last night for the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Rawson Square.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Danny Johnson officially lit the 46-foot tree, decorated with more than 14,000 lights, at 8:45pm.

Mr Johnson wished the people of the Bahamas a very merry Christmas on behalf of Prime Minister Perry Christie.

Just before the tree lighting, the crowd was entertained by performances from the Creative Folklore Arts Company, the St. Anne’s Choir and the Boys Choir of the Bahamas.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force’s Marching Band also performed before the celebration ended with a Junkanoo rush out.
