Young dad gunned down at Junkanoo practice

A 23-year-old father of one became the country’s latest murder victim when he was gunned down at Junkanoo practice.

Police say the victim, who was identified as Abayami Josh Sergeant, was with a group of friends on Christie Park around 11:30pm Wednesday when they were approached by three men one of whom was armed with a handgun.

The victim and his friends tried to run, but Josh was shot in the upper right side of his chest.

He died at the scene.

Police sources say he was recently released from prison.

The suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction.

Police are appealing to members of the public who may have information on this latest murder to contact them at 911 or 919, crime stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS or the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991.

This murder is the 89th for the year and the second in 48 hours.

On Tuesday, 17-year-old Trevon Black was gunned down in broad daylight.

According to reports, the teen, of Meadow Lane, East Street, was standing with a group of men around 4pm in the area of Dunmore Street and Hospital Lane, when they were approached by a man with a gun.

The gunman fired several shots in their direction, hitting Trevon in the chest.

He was taken to hospital in a private vehicle, but died of his injuries.

Police have one man in custody.

Investigations continue.
