High scoring for ladies, but pitcher's duel for men

Stark contrasts in game one of both New Providence Softball Association championship series, with a high scoring finish in the ladies division, followed by a pitchers’ duel in the men’s nightcap.

The Bommer G Truckers edged the Dorin United Hitmen 1-0, while the  Bommer G Operators doubled up the Lady Hitmen 14-7 to take one game leads in both series, at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex Saturday night.

A double by Orlando McPhee in the fifth inning to plate Darren Mortimer was the  was the game’s only score in a match dominated by both aces from the mound.

Adny Bethel delivered 12 strikeouts in the win, while Alcott Forbes struck out 11 strikeouts in the loss.

Mortimer finished 1-2 with a run, Orlando McPhee finished 2-2 with one RBI. 

The Hitmen had an opportunity to tie the game in the sixth inning, however William Delancey was thrown out at home plate trying to stretch a triple into an in the park home run.

In the ladies’ matchup, the high scoring Operators’ offense continued to roll through the competition en route to a championship.

Shanell Symonette was the game’s winning pitcher while Thela Johnson was tagged with the loss.

The Operators offense was led by Lethira Brown who finished a perfect 2-2 at the plate accompanied by three runs and one RBI, Antonia Simmons was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI and Vantrice Bowleg was 2-4 with two runs and two RBI.

The Lady Hitmen were led by Lashan Fowler who finished 2-3 with two RBI, Johnson was 1-2 with two runs and Rondell Cooper was 1-3 with two runs.

The Operators eliminated the YII Shipping Lady Wildcats to secure their berth into the final after they took the best-of-five series with a 3-2 advantage.

The Lady Hitmen, swept aside the defending champions Proper Care Pool Lady Sharks capped by a 10-0 shutout in game three of the series.

On the men’s side the Hitmen completed the sweep of the YII Shipping Bulldogs, while the Truckers eliminated the Blue Chips Buccaneers in the other semifinal.

Both series’ continue Tuesday with game two beginning with the Ladies’ matchup at 7pm.
