Former parliamentarian Bruce Charles Braynen laid to rest

A state recognised funeral was held Thursday for former parliamentarian Bruce Charles Braynen at St Mary the Virgin Anglican Church on Thursday. He was laid to rest in the church's cemetery.

Mr Braynen, who was 99, served in both Houses of Parliament, as Vice President of the Senate and as the Member of Parliament for the St Agnes Constituency. In the early years following the attainment of Majority Rule he served on a number of Government Boards including the Bahamas Electricity Corporation and the Airport Licensing Authority.

A contractor by trade, Mr. Braynen was described as "a gentleman of the old school" by former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham. Mr Ingraham also described him as man of great integrity and quiet dignity whose decorum and standards are worthy of emulation by later generations of parliamentarians and indeed by all citizens. He said Mr Braynen's death just one year short of his centenary marks the close of another of the early chapters of the making of the modern Bahamas.

Mr Braynen is survived by his five sons - Anthony, Michael, Alasis and Rodney Braynen and Chann Hall, his three daughters- Mavis, Miller, Barbara King and Olimae Braynen and other family members.
