FREEPORT – Employees at First Caribbean International Bank were evacuated following a fire scare yesterday.

Fire officials were called to the bank at downtown Freeport around 3pm after persons smelled what they believed to be smoke inside the building.

Two fire units arrived at the scene. There were no customers inside the bank at the time of the incident.

As employees waited outside, firemen conducted a thorough inspection, but found that there was no fire.

It was determined that the smell was coming from a faulty air-condition unit.

Technicians were called in to check and repair the unit before employees were allowed back inside.

In a separate alert smoke was detected at BORCO’s offshore jetty on Monday, prompting an immediate investigation from the company’s executives.

Firemen received reports around 4pm on Monday that smoke was coming from the jetty in waters a quarter mile off Pinder’s Point.

According to reports, a concerned resident had spotted the smoke and alerted officials.

Fire crews applied foam to the area and extinguished the smoke. No one was injured and there was no oil spill.

The company stated that prior to the alert, a crew was working in the area of the jetty. An executive from BORCO’s head office is on Grand Bahama conducting investigations.
