Tropical Storm warning issued for The Bahamas

A TROPICAL storm watch has been issued for the central Bahamas, including Cat Island, the Exumas, Long Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador, and for the southeastern Bahamas, including the Acklins, Crooked Island, Long Cay, the Inaguas, Mayaguana and the Ragged Islands.

The Government issued the warning as Tropical Storm Sandy started to strengthen in the Atlantic.

Jamaica has issued a hurricane warning and Cuba has issued a hurricane watch for the Cuban provinces of Camaguey, Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin and Guantanamo.

A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area, in this case within 36 hours. A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area.
