NPBA: Wreckers pull of 108-82 win over Caribs

THE New Providence Basketball Association, displaying its new live statistics for all of its games on its recently constructed website, had just one match on Tuesday night with the Y-Care Wreckers pulling off a 101-82 triumph over the College of the Bahamas Caribs.

After taking a close 19-18 margin at the end of the first quarter, the Wreckers extended their lead to 54-39 at the half. They were outscored 22-20 by the Caribs in the third quarter, but they managed to post a 76-61 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Wreckers went on a 27-21 spurt in the final period to close out the game.

Kevin Smith led five players in double figures with a game high 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, 4-of-8 from the three-point line and 3-of-4 from the free throw line in 25 minutes and 41 seconds. Anthony Whylly was next with 15 points in about 16 minutes, while Mario Pickstock and Jamarise King both contributed 13.

The Wreckers also out-rebounded the Caribs as Kevin Armstrong, who scored just six points, pulled down a game high nine boards. King trailed with seven. Armstrong had a game high five assists, Smith finished with a side high four steals and Leon Bain helped out with two blocks.

Only two players were in double figures for the College of the Bahamas. Reuben Goodman paced their attack with 21 points in almost 27 minutes. He also had four rebounds and two steals. Glen Davis added 16 points with seven rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist.

Quinn Brown was the next highest scorer with just nine points and six rebounds. Kirkwood Williams and Sherman Bowe had eight and seven points respectively to help out. Bowe and Williams pulled down nine and eight rebounds apiece.

The NPBA has initiated its website www.npbabasketball.com, a proactive move designed to provide an up to the minute detail of the progress of the league.

The home page states: The New Providence Basketball Association “Return to Prominence.”

This season will be dedicated to the memory of Arthur ‘Gully’ Rolle. The former long-time coach of the Beck’s Cougars and a former national team coach, recently passed away.

The site depicts the league’s schedule/reults, live stats, teams, executives NPBA Constitution & By-Laws and the Official FIBA Basketball Rules.

There are a total of 12 teams in the league, divided into two divisions.

The Vince Ferguson Division is made up of last year’s runners-up Mailboat Cybots, Real Deal Shockers, COB Caribs, Double R Services Ltd. Cleaners, BTC Digitals and the Pyramid Food Rockets.

The John Archer Division is comprised of the defending champion Commonwealth Bank Giants, Royal Bahamas Police Force Crimestoppers, Y-Care Wreckers, PJ Stingers and the Woodside Petroleum Conquerors.
