The Bahamas Electrical Company says power outages are inevitable but they are taking it "minute by minute" Delmay Seymour of BEC emergency services told The Tribune today.

Mr Seymour said the the company is still assessing the storm as Hurricane Sandy draws near.

"We have the whole Bahamas to be concerned about and we're working along with NEMA and the other agencies," he said.

"The latest from the Meteorology office is we should really feel the effects about 1pm so we have crews out. As far as any outages, of course that is definitely expected to happen but we have a programme planned.

"Winds are about 105 mph in that storm and any time you have winds over 30 mph or 40 mph you can expect some kind of effect. How intense or widespread (the outages are) is what were looking at and we are taking steps to minimized any long-term effects."

Mr Seymour said BEC will stay in contact with the media in order to deliver any updates to the public, and stressed that although outages are to be expected in the hurricane force winds, the company is taking steps to minimise the inconvenience.
