FREEPORT – A young man was killed when the tractor he was operating dropped into waters some 60ft deep at a rock quarry plant on Tuesday evening.

Although police have not released the victim’s identity, unconfirmed reports suggest that he is 27-year-old Nevelin Gaitor, an employee of A& C Heavy Equipment & Construction Company.

Police Inspector Terecita Pinder, press liaison officer, said police received a report around 9:35pm of an industrial accident near Cemex Bahamas.

She said reports indicated that the victim was operating a tractor when it fell into 60ft of water, and had not resurfaced.

Police and EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene. Divers were also called in to assist in recovery efforts.

Distraught family members waited at the scene until the body was recovered from the water around 10pm.

Pinder said EMS personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
