THE Insurance Company of the West Indies became the first corporate sponsor of the Hummingbirds Association’s scholarship fund with a $5,000 donation.

The ICWI Group Foundation, the charitable arm of the company, was established in 1988 by the ICWI Group of Companies to organise, administer, develop and manage the group’s social responsibility and philanthropy projects.

The foundation provides an organised approach to ICWI’s charitable work, which is currently focused on early childhood education.

ICWI’s managing director Patrick Williams said: “I am truly inspired by ICWI and the ICWI Foundation which has education as one of its mandates. So, when the Hummingbirds reached out to us, it was a natural fit.

“ICWI has a long-standing history of contributions to education in Jamaica and throughout the territories in which it operates, and is committed to extending that same philanthropic goodwill to the Bahamas.”

The contribution was received by Hubert Edwards, president of the Hummingbirds Association. Expressing his gratitude for the donation, he said: “We are very very pleased that ICWI stepped up to the plate and we are thankful.

“ICWI is a well known long-standing Jamaican company and for them to be a flag bearer for this scholarship fund means a lot”.

Mr Edwards added: “$5,000 is a lot for a burgeoning organisation and they, ICWI, went over and above to get this fund off the ground. We appreciate this gesture and look forward to a long-term, productive and mutually beneficial relationship.”

The Hummingbirds, which started in 1978, is committed to contributing to the development of the Bahamas. The newly-established scholarship fund is designed to help Diaspora and Bahamian students who have difficulties in affording tertiary education.

Janett Jackson, ICWI marketing manager, said: “ICWI is heavily involved in education; it is one of the company’s main focuses in carrying out its corporate social responsibility.

“We are also committed to offering the best in general insurance in the Bahamas with first-class service and a range of products unique to the region and the Bahamas, such as our Road Angel Policy, our uninsured motorist cover and our Family-pak policy which bundles car, house and contents, just to name a few.
