A MEMORIAL service in honour of the late Paul Adderley, the country’s longest serving Attorney General, will be held tomorrow at PLP Headquarters, the party’s chairman Bradley Roberts confirmed.

Mr Roberts, who made the announcement at an installation luncheon for recently elected executives of the PLP women’s branch, praised the legacy left behind by Mr Adderley.

He said: “Adderley was a legal scholar and was widely admired for his intellectual prowess and uncanny ability to interpret the law. Paul was a formidable debater in the halls of Parliament and his character and reputation as a public servant were above reproach.

“Yes, the passing of this Stalwart Councillor and iconic figure in the political development of the Bahamas saddens us all, but Paul surely left an indelible legacy of excellence on this country and for that I am sure we all are happy and thankful to Almighty God.”

Shortly after Mr Adderley’s death was announced last Wednesday, Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell said his loss signalled the end of an era.

“We have lost a great son,” Mr Mitchell said. “I wish on behalf of the officers here to extend condolences.”

Mr Mitchell said a state funeral for Mr Adderley could be held some time this week.

The former Education Minister died at the Princess Margaret Hospital following a lengthy illness.

On Sunday, September 16, Mr Adderley was rushed to the hospital at around 1am. The Tribune understands Dr Duane Sands was the attending physician.

Mr Adderley was originally a member of the PLP, first elected to the House in 1961. He briefly left the party to found the National Democratic Party (NDP), later returning to the PLP, where he has remained until the end of his political career.

The memorial service is expected to begin at 6pm.
