NPSA

RAINED OUT

GAME four in the New Providence Softball Association’s best-of-five playoff series between the pennant winning Bommer G Lady Operators and former champions YII Shipping Wildcats got rained out on Saturday night.

The Lady Operators, who only lost one game during the regular season, lead the series with a 2-1 advantage. League officials now intend to play game four 8pm Tuesday. If necessary, the fifth and deciding game will be played on Thursday.

The winner of the series will go on to play against the first year Lady Hitmen in the best-of-seven championship series. The Lady Hitmen swept the defending champions Proper Care Pool Lady Sharks in three straight games, including the clincher in game three on Thursday night, 10-0.

SOFTBALL

NATIONAL TEAM

THE Bahamas Softball Federation men’s national team is expected to return home from the Pan Am Championships and World qualifiers in Medellin, Colombia, having won only one of the eight games they played.

The team, managed by Godfrey ‘Gully’ Burnside and led by the 1-2 pitching punch of Adney “The Heat” Bethel and Alcott Forbes, finished with a fifth ranking on defense, but was eighth in offense. They failed to qualify for either of the two tournaments after turning in a disappointing 1-8 win-loss record.

Two of the players, however, were named to the All-Tournament team because of their performances. Wayde ‘Eric’ Johnson, who was tied for second in the most steals category with four, was selected as the third baseman on the team, while Sherman Ferguson was selected as the right fielder.

BAISS SEASON

OPENING

THE Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools is all set to begin its 2012/13 calendar 4pm today with softball.

Twelve private schools will compete in four divisions - eight junior girls, 10 junior boys, 11 senior girls and 12 senior boys.

Last year, the Nassau Christian Academy Crusaders won the senior boys title, while the St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine held onto the titles in the senior girls and both the junior boys and girls divisions. It will be interesting to see who emerges as this year’s champions.

The season is expected to run until November 17-18 when the sudden death playoffs are scheduled to get underway. The best-of-three championship is scheduled for November 12-16.

SOFTBALL

GSSSA SEASON

OPENING

AS mandated by the Sports Division of the Ministry of Education, the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association is slated to kick off its 2012/13 season today with softball rather than volleyball. Their games will be played at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex, starting at 4pm in all divisions – junior boys and girls and senior boys and girls. The schedule was changed to ensure that all of the teams will be ready to compete in a Bahamas Softball Federation annual Austin Knowles National High School Softball Championship during the mid-term break.
