Woman drowns as car plunges into canal

FREEPORT – The body of a young woman was retrieved from a vehicle that went into a canal in an upscale residential area early Sunday morning.

The victim, who is believed to be in her mid-20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, just off Port of Call Drive around 3am.

Police reported that a second woman who was in the vehicle when it went in the water, was able to escape.

Asst Supt Loretta Mackey said police received a call at about 2.36am that a car had gone into the canal and persons were trapped inside.

When officers arrived, one of the victims, a 31-year-old female passenger, had already escaped from the sinking red Ford Explorer.

According to initial reports, the deceased woman was driving and, while attempting to negotiate a turn, went into the canal.

ASP Mackey said the body of the female was pulled from the water by police and a member of the public.
