NATIONAL BOWLING CHAMPS: Driskell and Richard in the lead

WITH a blistering 1,314 (219 average) 6-game set, Richard “Richie” Pyfrom leads the men in the Bahamas Bowling Federation’s National Bowling Championships after the first night of competition Monday night at Mario’s Bowling and Entertainment Palace.

The event is slated to run through Sunday, April 21, when the final is expected to be aired live on Cable 12 TV. In a shocker, Charles “CQ” Johnson is in second place with a total pinfalls of 1,252. Johann Pyfrom, Richie’s brother, is “right there” with a total pinfall of 1,251, a 206 average.

In fourth place is former bowling national champion (1999) Sonith Lockhart with a total pinfalls of 1,246 (207.667 average). Rounding out the top five men is Mario “Hawk” Brown with a total pinfalls of 1,234 which gives him a 6 game average 205.667. Tournament favourite David Slatter is in 8th position with a total pinfalls of 1,208 (201.33 average).

Former three-time champion Leonardo “Lee” Davis finds himself in the 10th spot with a total pinfalls of 1,196 for a 199.33 average. It’s “early” yet with this being the first of three mandatory 6-games block. Bowlers are jockeying to make the Round of 18.

The top 18 will bowl another 6-game block to determine who will make the TV finals. All scores carry over to the round of 18 i.e. total pinfalls over 24 games. On the women’s side, Driskell Rolle leads with 1,139 total pinfalls for a 189.8 average.

Newcomer Xynea Johnson is closely behind with a total pinfalls of 1,112 for a 185.3 average. Rounding out the top five women is Janice Hoyte with 988 (164.7 average), Angie Smith (total pinfall 950) for a 158 average and in 5th sport is Camille Burnside with 911 pinfalls for a 151.8 average. The tournament continued Tuesday when the D & E categories for the men took to the lanes to bowl their first 6-games block. Women C and D categories are also slated to start today as the campaign to become the bowling champion of the Bahamas. Action starts at 6:30pm.
