Summer camp for special needs children

The Bahamas National Council for Disability will host a special three day summer enrichment programme for children with special needs this month.

Special education pioneer Dr Corolyn Hanna created the camp and will host the special needs children from August 5-7 at the grounds of the Bahamas National Council for Disability (BNCD) from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm.

“We want it to be a fun filled, recreational and learning experience, which at the same time will expose these little ones to activities that their parents, families could perhaps not be able to provide,” said organisers of the camp.

This summer programme is special for more than one reason: It seeks to honour and pay tribute to a lady who dared to dream big, who was determined to make her dream a reality. I speak of Dr. Corolyn L. Hanna, who pioneered special education by creating an educational and training programme for slow learners and persons with special needs. It was through her efforts and hard work that

Special Services came about in the Ministry of Education,” said representatives of the council.

The Bahamas National Council for Disability was founded in 1973 and serves as an advocacy group for persons with special needs. 2013 marked the 40th anniversary of the council, coinciding with the country’s 40th anniversary of independence.

“How fitting then it is in the spirit of equality of opportunities that we celebrate our little darlings who are marginalised, disenfranchised, and disabled by recognising on this our 40th anniversary, the lady who had that pioneering spirit and has proven that if given the opportunity all children can learn.”
