Ravens are champions of Flag Football League

FOR the second time in three years, the Summit Academy Ravens are the champions of the Bahamas Flag Football League.

The Ravens won the men’s league title with a 58-32 win over the BTC Avengers at the Roscow Davies Soccer Field, Blue Hills Sporting Complex.

Wide receiver and return man Ashley Roberts was named the game’s most valuable player after he totalled five receptions. Kevin Fox had two touchdown receptions, Jamaal Storr had three touchdowns -two rushing and one receiving - while Mitchell Johnson and Antoine Roberts each added a touchdown reception.

Quarterback Renaldo Dorsett threw five touchdowns and scored another rushing touchdown on the ground.

Roberts dislocated his finger just days before the game prior to his MVP performance. “I just tried not to think about it out there today, just go out and make plays,” Roberts said. “No matter what happened, I wasn’t going to miss this game so in practice my teammates popped it back into place and I was good to go. We had a plan to go out there and execute and we were able to do that. It’s redemption after what happened last year, so we needed to come out here and make a statement not just to that team but to the entire league. I think we did that.”

The loaded Ravens offense was supported by a defense which forced five turnovers, scored a safety and had another defensive touchdown called back due to a late penalty.

Rodwell Knowles had two interceptions, Thomas Wildgoose and Theo Knowles each accounted for one interception and Damien Longley’s sack forced the safety. John-Marc Nutt contributed on special teams with a perfect 8-8 extra point statline.

The Ravens scored on the opening possession of the game when Dorsett connected with Johnson for a deep play down the left sideline. After Knowles caught his first interception on the Avengers’ opening possession, the Ravens added their second score when Dorsett connected with Storr for a 14-0 lead and the rout was on.

The Ravens were able to take a 21-0 lead when Fox caught his first touchdown pass of the game on the ensuing possession. The Avengers finally reached the scoreboard when quarterback Lemon Gorospe threw the first of his four touchdown passes.

Knowles caught his second interception of the game and returned it for a touchdown. However, the return was called back due to a down field blocking penalty.

The Ravens offense would eventually convert in the redzone when Dorsett threw a touchdown pass to Storr.

The Ravens nearly added another score as time expired when Dorsett found Fox in the endzone for another touchdown pass, however it was ruled a sack before the ball was released. They took a 28-6 lead into the half.

The Avengers’ offense came alive in the second half with four touchdown scores, but had no answer for the Ravens’ offense who equalled their 28-point output from the first half. They opened with a quick score on their first possession, added the conversion for a 28-14 score and the teams traded scores for much of the half.

After moving through the air for much of the first half, the Ravens ground game scored three of their four second half touchdowns.

Storr scored on a short yardage rushing touchdown and the Avengers responded with a deep touchdown pass from Gorospe to Andrew Bodie to make the score 35-20. Dorsett added a rushing touchdown from 10 yards out to regain the three touchdown lead for the Ravens and a 42-20 advantage. Gorospe

completed another touchdown pass to Nesley Lucien, 42-26, and Storr would score his third touchdown of the day on a 60-yard run, 49-26.

After the Avengers scored, veteran receiver Antoine Roberts scored the Ravens’ final touchdown with his reception of a deflected pass at the goal line. Longley notched the game’s final score with his sack for a safety.

The Ravens previously won the 2011 title with a 33-20 win over the Predators but relinquished the title in 2012 with a 9-0 loss to the Spartans.
