Bahamian maritime police rescue crash pilot

BAHAMIAN authorities have rescued a pilot who crash landed his small plane near Exuma.

The US Coast Guard and Bahamian officials say the plane went down in the water on route to Exuma International Airport. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Gabe Somma says the Cessna took off today from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

The Coast Guard dispatched a rescue helicopter from a US military base on Andros Island but a Bahamian maritime police unit reached the pilot first.

The pilot is identified as Jefferson Freitas. His hometown and nationality are not immediately available.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
