Shaolin monks perform to packed house

The Scores of Bahamians packed the National Centre for the Performing Arts to watch Chinese cultural performers display the best in martial arts and acrobatics. There was only standing space in the theatre for the Henan Cultural Performing Arts Group’s performance, which included Shaolin monks, chosen from around the monasteries of China.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Phedra Rahming officially welcomed the Henan Group, thanking Chinese Ambassador to the Bahamas, His Excellency Hu Shan for attending, along with Senator Greg Burrows, and senior officials in the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture, as well as the Ministry of Education.

The show began with performances by Bahamian martial arts groups. The Shaolin Monks displayed their finest moves, including the channelling of chi, or life force, to break steel; the use of swords, sticks and whips, and amazing stunts. The acrobats also wowed the crowd with extraordinary contortions and the skilful use of props.
