Police custody death inquest visits room where Jamie Smith died

THE jury in the Jaime Smith coroner’s inquest were taken to see the room where the 35-year-old died while in police custody at the Central Detective Unit.

An autopsy revealed that Smith died of asphixia on February 9.

The officers who were present when he died and Acting Coroner Jeanine Weech-Gomez were also present during yesterday’s tour of CDU.

The media was not allowed to accompany the group.

Prior to the tour, the jury heard from the final witness in the inquest, toxicologist Cyprian Collie, who said he tested a blood sample from Smith and found traces of marijuana.

He said one side effect of marijuana use could be impaired cognitive function, which can cause someone to act in an unreasonable manner.

Christina Galanos, who represents the Smith family, asked if another side effect could be loss of co-ordination.

The toxicologist said yes.
