PM: Minnis will pay price over Cuban claims

By KHRISNA VIRGIL

Tribune Staff Reporter

kvirgil@tribunemedia.net

PRIME Minister Perry Christie says Opposition leader Dr Hubert Minnis will ‘pay a political price’ for claiming there was a cover-up over the alleged abuse of Cuban detainees in the Bahamas.

The PM also said he wished the Bahamian authorities’ probe into the claims had happened sooner because the country was ‘suffering as a result of it.’

Mr Christie spoke out after Dr Minnis, FNM Leader, said there had been a ‘fully-fledged cover-up’ after allegations were levelled that detainees were abused while they were being held at the Carmichael Road detention centre.

Mr Christie said yesterday the government had nothing to hide in getting to the bottom of what happened at the centre.

He echoed comments by Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell, who said an investigation had been launched into the claims and when it is complete, ‘the government will act.’

Mr Christie said yesterday: “Dr Minnis just did something that was never done. I have had 40 years in public life. Dr Minnis purported to call me corrupt and you are asking me about what I think about him? I am going to ensure that the price he pays is a political one and the right one.

“I have said over and over and over there is nothing to hide, nothing at all. To me it is an amazing kind of allegation from Bahamians to say that we are sitting here covering up something that will cause the country embarrassment.

“But the investigation, I wish it had happened sooner. I wish it was much more quickly executed because we are suffering as a result of it.”

Mr Minnis said earlier in the week that the FNM found out that on May 20 there was an attempted escape from the detention centre by seven Cuban detainees.

This escape was prevented, he said. As punishment for the attempted escape, at least five detainees were physically abused to a severe degree, he claimed.

The abuse was so significant that three of the detainees had to be taken to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment, Minnis said.

One person was detained and two others returned to the detention centre.

Following the beatings, said Mr Minnis, the remaining detainees performed and videotaped a reenactment of the earlier beatings.

Mr Christie chastised the FNM for making serious statements regarding the treatment of Cubans at the centre before the government investigation was completed.

“It arms people abroad who do not have access to the facilities, who do not have access to us, who have not asked us to give an explanation to them, but they have drawn a conclusion that we are being cruel.

“I dispatched my ministers of Foreign Affairs and National Security to meet with the Foreign Minister of Cuba to have one-on-one talks with him with respect to having in place an understanding similar to what the Americans have.

“When the Americans pick up Cubans on the high seas and on international waters they keep them on board the boat until they can put them back into Cuba.

“When we pick them up we bring them here to the detention centre. We run the risk then of being criticised by not giving them the level of comfort that their counterparts or their relatives or their friends would wish them to have. So we are in a no-win situation in the Bahamas.”

Over the past few months since the abuse claims emerged, and a number of Cubans have been deported, the Bahamas government has faced protests from Cuban groups in South Florida, Amnesty International and others.

You do realize that the PM didn't say this in reference to the Cuban situation. It was in response to a question about Dr. Minnis and his allegations about Peter Nygard. Do ya'll fact check at the Tribune? The footage was aired last night of the interview with the Prime Minister. Just garbage.

This certainly sounds like he's talking about the Cuban fiasco to me... *I have said over and over and over there is nothing to hide, nothing at all. To me it is an amazing kind of allegation from Bahamians to say that we are sitting here covering up something that will cause the country embarrassment.

But the investigation, I wish it had happened sooner. I wish it was much more quickly executed because we are suffering as a result of it.*

By now most Bahamalanders know that the leader of the red shirts Minnis did something that has exposed the nastiness of the extent in which the reds are prepared to go to shortened PM Christie's time in office. Whatever in the hell ever happened to the once mighty, powerful red shirts party? And, why should even you red shirts care? Because even if it means destroying Bahamaland's tourism economy on the way to getting rid of PM Christie, so be it. Is this really still the party of Comrades Cecil and Brent Symonette. It has become a "Gallery of Wackos," slapp'in other MP's and all. No damn wonder Abaco's Edison has chosen to sit all by he lonesome self up in the House. Queen Liz must be disgusted with the behavior of Her Majesty's Official Opposition. She needs summon them all to Buckingham Palace, forthwith.

check what PGC says in the guardian ,they did go to the hospital ,IF Minnis did not stay on them 2 cronies ,retired judge and clergymen ,would have come out and said nothing happened ,,PGC you are the PM if you want the report faster than 3 months you could have it ,in fact you already have it and are buying time ,now your afraid to release a "white washed" version b/c you don,t know exactly what Doc Minnis has ,interesting political theater ....,

Come on three months and the PM of the country can,t get the people that work for him to complete an investigation into something that is damaging us in the international press ,,,,,,,,,,geez lousie , if you believe that i got an oil well in my back yard , want to invest and buy shares ???

1

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 8 months ago

This is just plain weird.

Which authorities is the PM referring to? Is he referring to himself who after 3months just seems to be getting involved publicly and admitting that something happened? Who allowed the Bahamian public to believe that nothing happened and our good name was being besmirched without cause? Which authorities took too long to act? Please clarify. Reporters please ask.

Why is the PM attacking Dr Minnis for doing what any good opposition should? Question WHY?

Investigation....hmmm this seems relatively simple..someone (at least one) went to the hospital to be treated. Someone had to treat them and document the nature of the injuries and the likely causes of the injury. If the beatings were that severe someone had to meet it out and be interviewed. There is reasonable force and unreasonable force...a severe beating would be unreasonable force.

Since this is causing harm to the entire Bahamas as the PM says, the entire Bahamas needs a truthful report about what happened and when it happened: when did the incident happen? When did the detainee go to the hospital? Was it reported as a crime that night? When was defence force command informed? When was Dr Nottage informed? When was Fred Mitchell informed? When was the PM informed? When was cabinet informed?

The more i hear, it seems the video may have actually been a reenactment just as Mr Minnis claimed...

Full of hot air...someone was beaten severely.

4

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 8 months ago

The PM should really be directing his anger at the guys who dished out the beating, they're the ones who've damaged the Bahamas' reputation. It's because of them that we have all this negative publicity, not Dr Minnis. For once deal with the source of the problem PLEASE

Thankyou hotep86 - I listened to PMC on both channels 11 & 12 & apart from being appalled at his very undiplomatic response I did know it was in reference to Nygard - and not the Cuban fiasco. Who is doing the reporting around here? and does anybody check anything & does anybody care about the dreadful direction this country is taking. I fear for my grandchildren now!! Just look at all the cover-up that has been done with the Ambassador and all the money that this must be costing the Bahamas - when we don't have any!!

1

TalRussell 10 years, 8 months ago

Just listen some things being said by people, whom I sure as hell hope are neither Bahamalanders or residents of our Bahamaland. You bleeding-hearts, since I thought that the detention center was a place to keep those entering our tiny county illegally, since when did it become a political forum for the red shirts advancement of their one and only platform policy .... to force PM Christie to leave office early. Which would you rather have as your government anyway? A red shirts regime that allowed access to any and all to enter, live and work in Bahamaland, or a government who IS finally enforcing our immigration laws? On May 2012, the voters said NO to the continued abuse of the sovereignty of our Bahamaland. That is what democracy is all about. The Detention center for detaining the illegal, is no damn place to go seeking democracy.

1

concernedcitizen 10 years, 8 months ago

Very emotive ,I want an opposition that keeps the governments feet to the fire ,be it FNM, PLP, or DNA ,Funny i did not see such "nationalistic" post from you when the PLP put up billboards about murder for all and sundry to see ..

2

TalRussell 10 years, 8 months ago

Comrade what about a opposition party that will actually show up in the House and not robbing the taxpayers who pay their MP salaries, not appearing in the international media bad mouthing their own tiny Bahamaland? If i was Edison, I'd inform the Governor-General that since he forms the Majority of the Opposition members in the House, then he should be named Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition? Pretty damn sure he's get the support of both the PM and Speaker. Eat -your-heart-out Comrade Bran, cause if only you too had been elected to the House, Her Majesty might have named you as her Deputy Official Party Leader, to Edison?

0

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 8 months ago

You are correct these people committed a crime by trying to enter our country illegally and they ended up exactly where they should have, "detained". You get no argument from me there.

But what I don't get is.., why is the opposing response always tantamount to "you don't love the Bahamas"? Fred Mitchell tried to organize the whole country to fight back against the protestors in Miami without ever telling the Bahamian public that something actually did happen. That is beyond the pale.

No one has the right to beat someone detained in their care. It is indefensible.

0

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 8 months ago

How does that make what one or two Bahamians did at the detention center right? I didn't ask why youre upset, my question is why are you pointing fingers at everybody including the posters here instead of the guys who beat someone in custody??

0

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 8 months ago

I said "one or two", its an expression, as in "it wasnt the entire force", I haven't seen the video, I dismissed it as crap a long time ago, it's only the recent statements of Minister Mitchell, and now Dr Minnis and the PM that I'm raising questions

0

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 8 months ago

Anything goes seems to be the order of the day, but I believe in doing things decently and in order. I don't continuously curse at other posters and tell them that they don't love their country because their opinion differs from mine. Most of all I don't snoop in other people's private records. I am waiting for the PM to give a complete report of what occurred. He has the authority and the obligation to do so.

Bozo is angry and cursing once again. Too many angry young and old men.

In true FNM style, Dr. Minnis abandons Bahamians at the very first opportunity. I hope he's not looking for Bahamian votes in the next election.

Hubert Ingraham paid a big price for abandoning Bahamians who returned the favor wholesale by abandoning him at the polls.

The Foreign National Movement has learned nothing from their crushing defeat at the hands of the electorate, and will remain in the wilderness for quite some time to come.

1

concernedcitizen 10 years, 8 months ago

how has Dr Minis abandon Bahamians ??do you reside in the Bahamas ??

0

It's weird how people are going all over the place looking for bogey men.

The international community is waiting for us to deal with an incident of abuse of a political refugee. Deal with that. They know nothing about Dr Minnis, they could care less about him. All they know is Cubans in custody were severely beaten and they have been waiting a long time on a satisfying response from the govt of the day. That's Perry Christie's administration.

0

The PLP did not win the majority of the vote.

If the DNA was not in the election the FNM would have won by a large margin.

So don't try and tell us what the majority of the population wanted.

They didn't want the PLP!

They bought the vote with drug, numbers and stem cell money! Not the proposed belief in their ability to govern!

Add the FNM and DNA votes together and the PLP would have lost again.

2

herecomestheboom 10 years, 8 months ago

ahh no. It the FNM got every single non-PLP they would still have lost, just not as badly perhaps.

How can Her Majesty's Official Opposition, minus Abaco's Edison, be running their mouths to the international media, when three of the detained Cuban's HAVE claimed that they were NOT illegals in Bahamaland's waters but on a "leisure cruise" in Bahamaland's waters? Comrades the red shirts want the world to believe the Cubans were out there risking their lives on a homemade raft, when by their OWN admissions, they were "pleasure cruising" in a SAFE boat that simply had developed ENGINE problems. The red shirts want you to think they had developed WIND problems? That's a lie. What about a video showing them being beaten by detention guards, which by now only ENEMIES of Bahamaland would still be asking anyone to believe, that it was not produced using cuban actors for the sole purpose to bring HARM to Bahamaland's vital tourism economy. Comrades in the red shirts, who do not agree with your leaders over zealousness to bring economic harm to Bahamaland, tell your leaders it's time for them to do what the "illegal" Cuban detainees done did to themselves at the detention center ... sew their damn mouths shut. Tell your leaders they are ROBBING taxpayers every day, that they collect their MP paychecks but refuse to show up in the House.

LOL @ the PLP Kool Aid drinkers. It is amusing to watch their gyrations and name-calling instead of dealing with the central issue. The bottom line is this -- when did Perry Christie know that the Cubans were being beaten in the detention center and what did he do about this? Supplementary topic staying to the central point of the issue -- why did Flaming Fred lie to the Americans? Answer those please.

So by your logic we should continue to deny that anything happened because as you state "there is NO EVIDENCE (yet)". And you are comfortable holding this position, even with all the information already in the public domain, and yet continue to call everyone else dummies, scumbags and clowns, go figure. By the way you should look into your need to belittle others, it may give you some insight into yourself. Additionally as I have mentioned to you before, calling people names, exaggeration and generalization are very poor debate tricks usually used by persons who are inept at debating the facts.

Comrade Banker I believe you mean well but the MP's constituents didn't send their representatives to parliament to become cowards for foreign radical interests. Show me just one statement that was made against Bahamaland's treatment of the Cubans, by the US or any other government? Never, never in Bahamaland's long history has any of Her Majesty's Official Opposition parties, ever been conned into using the international media to wage economic war against their own government. If there is any shame, it is the shame being done by the red shirts against their own Bahamalanders. These are the same MP's who have no guilt when it comes to them ROBBING the taxpayers, by keeping their paychecks for ever day they are not reporting for duty in the House. If they worked anywhere else there backsides would be FIRED for failure to show up for work. What a bunch of FREELOADERS. Look at Abaco's Edison, he's no damn coward. He's a real MP for Marsh Harbour. Edison would never ROB taxpayers. Comrade Banker don't you dare shame your earned integrity by supporting MP's, who dare bring shame upon themselves. Banker don't you dare join in with them, when what they really need, is for their own red shirts to give them all a swift kick to they bullocks.

1

If you only knew the real Edison Key, you wouldn't be singing his praises. For starters, I would suggest looking at his land holdings in Abaco. Then I would look to see how the land was obtained. But that is merely a digression in this discussion.

My belief, is that if you have done wrong as an individual, a country or a government, then one should admit it. We don't sweep it under the carpet. We swept the dirty doings of LOP under the carpet, and look at the Bahamas that we have today, 40 years after independence. We have a crime-infested, morally bankrupt society where everything goes and hypocrisy is king.

Randy Frazier gets re-elected to his church after having sex in the church. Percy built a web shop next door to a church so one could box the triple on the cell phone right from the pews. Our murder rate is on par with Columbia and Mexico -- among the worst in the world. You can't trust anyone with your money as far as you can throw them. Colleagues from around the world ask me why anyone would want to invest in BISX with the Julian Brown, Owen Bethel, et al fiascoes. We are rotten to core, and the partisanship trumps the ethical moral compasses of everyone. We preach against homosexuality and half the cabinet have had same sex relationships, including the PM, the Foreign Minister and the Minister of Tourism. We know about the Rolex Watch and Anna Nicole, and partisanship still gets the miscreant elected.

We are finished both as a country and as a people. Diogenes would roam forever looking for his honest man. Quite frankly sir or madam (I suspect that you are Phillipa but have no proof -- you write more intelligently than Phillipa sounds on the radio), you are part of the problem and not part of the solution. Rabid support of the PLP is the biggest obstacle to mature nationhood in this country. But that is a moot point, because collectively, we are a nation of truth deniers, hypocrites, and poorly socialized misfits with no real standing as men among men in the global village. We have lost our way as a people and as a country, and it won't come back for generations until enlightenment hits the people, present company included.

Comrade Banker considering the disparaging comments you have made against one of Abaco's own, I would be shocked if you had never met Edison? That you are prepared to say such things, all based on rumors and not personal facts.

Wow! After one chance run'in with Abaco's Edison at the Provence restaurant and he showed you all he Crown Land papers? In we Bahamaland, truth has a shorter lifespan than rumors. As Bahamlanders we all can enjoy a good rumor about the one's we do political battles with but repeating them in the media is a different story Comrade Banker You know what, Edison can teach Bahamlanders a damn lot about his hard work. A disciplined man whom Abacoians have for many years observed making the right personal and business decisions.

As far as non-cubanshttp://tdgamesonline.com/profile/pony...">. I've been alternating between Padron 2000 maduro and natural lately. The maduro is a bit spicier, but they both taste about the samehttp://demos.addicted-to-web.com/avar...">. This might be a bad example since it's very hard to visibly tell Padron's natural from maduro unless compared side by side. Similarly Fuente maduros and cameroons both have what I recognize as a the Fuente flavor and smell. Once again cameroon and maduro are similar, maybe I need to sit down with some sungrown and CT shaded Chateau Fuentes, but once again when smoking those versions I recognized a common flavor and smell which I guess I have to attribute to the filler and binder blend.
