PM: Need for heightened protection against crime

GIVEN the proliferation of resort developments in western New Providence, there is a “compelling need” for heightened protection against the scourge of crime, Prime Minister Perry Christie said yesterday.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Mahogany Hill hotel, Mr Christie revealed that to this end, government is considering using the Defence Force to help expand the reach of the police.

“As we introduce expanded commercial facilities through this part of the island, I want to be able to tell you what I’m doing to pay very special attention to ensuring that you have maximum coverage of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and as I’ve indicated to you, if necessary, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force,” Mr Christie said.

“I know that the Minister of National Security has been giving serious consideration as to how the RBDF can assist the RBPF in ensuring that we give adequate – and if not adequate, full coverage – of parts of the island that may be relatively remote.”

Addressing Mahogany Hill principal Mark Holowesko, the prime minister said: “Given your investment here, given its significance to our country, given the fact that you are a Bahamian making this investment – and I spoke about the rarity of that in this sector, given the proximity of the hugely successful residential areas of Lyford Cay, Old Fort, and Albany – there is a compelling need for the government of the Bahamas to ensure that there is maximum protection, not just for Paradise Island and Baha Mar, but also for this end of the island as you add now to the tourism complement in our country.

“Therefore, we would wish to assure you that we will be giving our best towards having the expectation of safety, security and a good time, out here at Mahogany Hill – that it is the order of the day.”

I dunno...I'm assuming the training is different..why not move the police from delivering groceries and hand that task back to social services?

Comrades why are policeman's being underused as chauffeurs to be driving around government officials in air-con-do government vehicles all over Nassau Town and Freeport? Policeman's that should be reassigned and guess what? It wont require the hiring of new policeman's. Why is it we can have extremely wealthy business owners and residents spotted driving they own vehicles, but oh no, that would fall beneath government officials status. Do we really think we should be ripp'in off taxpayers to pay our policeman's to be taking government officials wives grocery shopping and to the beauty salons? Please, the public treasury needs to take a taxpayers-money reality check.

So Mahogany Hill gets protection for their copper pipes while Potcake Miller doesn't at his bowling alley/store. Interesting.

Is this man seriously talking about the militarization of the police force? In any free society, when has this been a good idea? Do the research, and be prepared to have your personal freedoms curtailed if this becomes a reality. This is just an attempt to place a band aid on a gaping wound. Its not difficult to understand the underlying reasons for crime. There are more developed nations with vastly larger populations that are not suffering from high crime rates. How about working on our educational system which continues to churn out D and F average students? How about tackling income inequality in this nation, where its quite obvious that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting the raw deal? Bahamian governments have been failing the Bahamian people miserably for the past two decades. Proposals like this one do very little to offer in the way of hope or change.

It's the fault of both women and men -- none of them take any reproductive responsibility. If men believe that women are "on the take", then why don't they carry around some protection? Don't expect these "females" as you call them to protect themselves!!! Grow up!!

@Johnq - government failing us miserably for the past 2 decades - seems to me to be a lot longer than that!! Maybe your too young to remember otherwise.

Physician Assistant Education Requirements:

Physician assistant schools train you in every aspect necessary in order for you to become a qualified assistant (read more on my http://www.physician-assistantsalary....">website). With the proper certifications, you will be able to legally practice medicine under the supervision of a full-fledged physician. Apart from practicing medicine, your pharmaceutical and medical education will teach you how to conduct physical exams, counsel patients, assist in surgeries, and write prescriptions among others.

When choosing a school, do ensure that it is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or another relevant authority. You will also be required to obtain an http://www.nccpa.net/">NCCPA certificate before you can perform the job role. The examinations for these certifications are not as tough as medical schools but still require thorough preparation. Upon completing your course and getting recognized as a professional physician assistant, you can now begin your career in this highly in-demand field.

Ill start off by saying im most definitely not a conservative --- but the meaning behind hate crime legislation is kind of ridiculous. The crime should be punished because of the crime not because of who it is inflicted onhttp://www.casualcollision.com/profil...">. I realize part of the punishment is retribution to the family members etc (acceptably so) of the victimhttp://www.kidsgamehouse.com/profile/...">, however embracing the idea that one victim deserves more retribution over another for the same crime is really not one that should be reinforced. I just dont see a logical argument opposing this. Enlighten please.

If the punishment is not believed to be severe enough for the offenders then increase the minimum punishment for that crime instead of making a separate hate crimes category.

I realize that we do not live in a post discriminatory world. Saying that, I also realize simply now saying, "we're all even" is fixing nothing. I just think the best way is to create a culture of everyone having equal worth.

I see no problem with encouraging a more fair social structure and universal equal worth through positive discriminatory action but the opposite seems like a very "back in time" solution.

Thoughts would be encouraged :)

So tires of these idiot politicians who just don't get it; ALL Bahamians need & deserve police protection! That's why we pay taxes. Just because their new resort is 'behind God back' doesn't entitle them to anything special. Create more employment---hire a security firm. The more these politicians talk, the more I realize their way of thinking is stuck in the 1950s/60s. Gets on my last nerve!
