Six cubans arrested - but two go missing

ONLY four of the six Cubans apprehended by the US Coast Guard on Friday were taken to the Detention Centre, The Tribune understands.

Defence Force Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Origin Deleveaux said he is not sure where the other two men are.

The Tribune attempted to call the Department of Immigration, but calls were not returned before press time.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force brought the six Cubans to Nassau after they were picked up by the US Coast Guard 2.2 miles from Cay Sal.

Lt Deleveaux said despite the proximity of Cuba to Cay Sal, the officers could not just turn them around and send them back.

“We do not have the diplomatic relationship with Cuba like that. The Coast Guard picked them up after they were found in Bahamian waters. We have a ship rider agreement with the US, that empowers the US Coast Guard to be able to pick up people in our waters and turn them over to us.”

This latest group of Cubans being caught in Bahamian waters comes as an investigation into the treatment of a group of Cubans at the Detention Centre is underway.
