Macedonia secures berth into 19-and-under championship

WHILE Macedonia secured their berth into the 19-and-under championship, Golden Gates and St Paul’s have the upper hand in both their respective co-ed and men’s playoff series in the Baptist Sports Council’s 2013 Coca-Cola Softball Classic which will be completed this week.

On Saturday in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex, Macedonia turned around a dismal season by sweeping New Bethlehem 12-4 and 8-2 in their best-of-three playoffs to advance to the best-of-three championship that is slated to be played on Saturday against pennant winning Golden Gates.

Meanwhile, in the co-ed division, St Paul’s avenged a regular season loss by pulling off a close 8-6 win over St John’s to take a 1-0 lead going into game two 7pm Tuesday.

Pennant winning Golden Gates won by default over Macedonia to take a 1-0 lead in their series that is scheduled to continue 7pm Thursday.

On the men’s side, St Paul’s blanked Macedonia 6-0 to snatch a 1-0 lead in their playoff series that is all set to continue 8pm Tuesday.

Pennant winning Golden Gates had to come from behind for an 18-15 walk-off victory over Calvary Deliverance for a 1-0 lead with game two 8pm Thursday.

The two winning teams in both the co-ed and men’s divisions will clash in the best-of-three championship to be played Saturday along with the Macedonia vs Golden Gates’ 19-and-under series.

Here’s a summary of the games played on Saturday:

Golden Gates 18, Calvary Deliverance 15

Eugene Pratt hit a two-out grand slam home run to lift Golden Gates in their slugfest as they rallied from a 15-14 deficit in the bottom of the fourth for the walk-off-victory.

Pratt went 2-for-3 with six RBI and Sherman Ferguson, who had a two-run

homer, finished with three intentional walks, scoring four times.

Richard Bain was 2-for-4 with two RBI and four runs, Ramon Johnson was 2-for-2 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored and Calvin Greenslade was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs.

Alfred ‘Skater’ Munnings was the winning pitcher. Brad Wood Jr was tagged with the loss. Angelo Butler was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, scoring three runs, Jayson Clarke had two hits with a RBI, scoring four times, Patrick Lockhart was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs and Kawon Dames was 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored.

St Paul’s 6, Macedonia 0

Addie Finley went 2-for-3 with two runs and Peter Rahming was 2-for-3 with a RBI as St Paul’s got the win. Zhivargo Archer helped out by going 1-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Deval Storr got the win and D’Kyle Rolle was tagged with the loss. Kili Kemp, Kevin Moxey and Gregory Lockhart were all 1-for-2 in a losing effort.

St Paul’s 8, St John’s 6

Zhivargo Archer was 2-for-2 with a RBI and three runs scored, Lamar Watkins had a solo in-the-park homer and Addie Finley was 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead their whitewashing win.

Harold ‘Banker’ Fritzgerald was the winning pitcher and Alcott Forbes suffered the loss. Donnette Edwards and Shavette Taylor were both 1-for-2 with two RBI

and a run scored each for the losers. Detrix McCardy was 1-for-2 with two runs.

Macedonia 8, New Bethlehem 2

Courtney Smith had a perfect 3-for-3 day with a run, both Keith Moss and Weymond Demeritte were 2-for-3 with a RBI, scoring a run and Waymond Demeritte had a three-run triple, scoring a run to lead Macedonia to their sweep. Tavares Dames was the winning pitcher and Devon Curtis was the losing pitcher. Jafer Rolle, Devon Knowles, Christian Wright and Frederick Bethel were all 1-for-2 with Knowles scoring a run and Bethel getting a RBI in a losing effort.

Macedonia 12, New Bethlehem 4

Keithra Moss (two runs), Kili Kemp (two runs), Courtney Smith (with an in-the-park home run) and Kevin Moxey (with a solo homer) were all 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win. Keith Moss was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer, scoring twice and Tre Gilbert was also 2-for-2 with a RBI and two runs to help out. Tavares Dames was the winning pitcher and Jafer Rolle was tagged with the loss. Craig Bowe was 1-for-2 with a RBI and a run, DeShawn Knowles and Christian Wright were both 1-for-2 with a run scored and both Jafer Rolle and Devyn Munroe had one hit with a RBI with Rolle scoring a run in a losing effort.
