IN the latest chapter of the top rivalry in the Commonwealth American Football League, the defending champions evened the season series in the second matchup of the season.

The Orry J Sands Pros scored a 14-6 win over the V8 Fusion Stingrays in week five of the league at DW Davis Gym on Saturday. Both teams are now 3-1 in the standings.

The Pros got out to a quick start with a touchdown on the opening drive. After the rushing attack of Jamaal Coleby and Charles Edwards drove the Pros down to the redzone, they scored on short yardage on a quarterback sneak. After a failed conversion they led 6-0.

The Orry J Sands’ defence did not allow a single touchdown and forced five turnovers with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

The generally potent Stingrays rushing game was stifled all afternoon as the Stingrays’ offence struggled to move the ball with Jamaal Storr picking up big gains on the ground.

Pros linebacker Shirlen Godet led the way defensively with five tackles, two sacks and one fumble recovery, while Guerrolice Collie added another fumble recovery. Leon Davis caught two interceptions, while Charles Edwards added the third.

Pros took a 6-0 lead into the half and went ahead 12-0 on a 15-yard touchdown run from Coleby. He added the two point conversion to give the Pros a 14-0 lead.

The Stingrays got their only score of the game on the next play when Ishmail Sutherland returned the kickoff for a touchdown.

Driving down the field for a potential game tying score, Davis’ second interception with just over a minute left to play sealed the win for the Pros.

Defensively for the Stingrays, Wayde Higgs added an interception.

The Stingrays took a 20-6 meeting in the first matchup between the two teams in week three. Also in week five, the CAFL season kicked off in Grand Bahama at the GB Sporting Complex.

The Grand Bahama Bulldogs made a successful debut with a 20-2 win over Hunter’s Falcons.

The CAFL will have three teams in Grand Bahama, including the Bulldogs, Falcons and the return of one of the most feared and respected teams in CAFL history - the Eight Mile Rock Crushers.

The Crushers’ history began in the early 1970s and made the Nassau and Grand Bahama rivalry one of the most popular in Bahamian sports.

The three Grand Bahama teams will compliment the three teams in the capita - Pros, Stingrays and Baoilco Jets.

Inter-island travel will return next weekend when the Pros are expected to travel to Grand Bahama.

The CAFL in Grand Bahama will have the luxury of playing games at the GB Sporting Complex and the renowned Pine Bowl in Eight Mile Rock.
