FREEPORT – The man who was shot and killed by police in West End has been officially identified as 33-year-old Melvin Grant.

Last Friday, police were called to a home in West End around 1.30am where a man and woman were involved in an argument.

On arrival at the scene, officers saw a woman bleeding profusely from the head.

A man was following the woman with a knife in his hand.

Police ordered the man to drop the knife, but he refused, they said.

The man then allegedly charged towards an officer with the knife, putting the officer in fear for his life.

The officer drew his service revolver and shot the man.

He was taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital, where he later died around 3.30am.
