Hurricanes, Warriors are the national volleyball champions

THE St Andrew’s Hurricanes senior boys and Bishop Michael Eldon senior girls blazed equally dominant paths to their respective national titles when the Ministry of Education and the Bahamas Volleyball Federation hosted the National Tournament of Champions, sponsored by JS Johnson Insurance Company Limited.

The Hurricanes, stacked with junior national team members Rajahl Moxey and Anthony Misiewicz, swept through the tournament without surrendering a single set. They delivered a dominant performance over the course of the two-day event, going relatively untested en route to the title.

In the opening round, they defeated the Teleos Cherubims 21-16, 21-15 and had their most lopsided match of the tournament in the second round when they dispatched the GHS Magic 21-13, 21-11. They earned a bye directly to the semifinal where they topped Mt Carmel 21-14, 21-20. In the championship round they took a keenly contested finale, 25-20, 25-19 over the CV Bethel Stingrays.

In the opening round, the Magic defeated the Cherubims 21-12, 21-11, the Jaguars defeated the Cavaliers 21-10, 21-18, and the Stingrays defeated the Cavaliers 21-17, 21-20 and Jaguars 21-17, 21-14 in consecutive matches .

In the quarterfinals, Mt Carmel topped GHS 21-17, 21-18 and St George’s topped Teleos 21-13, 21-20.

In the girls’ draw, the Bishop Michael Eldon Warriors, the lone team from Grand Bahama, made the trip to New Providence a memorable one as they rolled through the competition.

The Warriors were led by Germany native Katherine Whoman, who was named the most outstanding player.

In their first match they topped the Teleos Cherubims 21-7, 21-13 and in round two got by the CV Bethel Stingrays 21-9, 21-20.

In the playoff rounds they defeated the top seeded St Augustine’s Big Red Machine 21-11, 21-16 and advanced to the semifinal where they defeated the CR Walker Knights 21-18, 21-19. In the final, they defeated the Cherubims for the second time in the tournament 25-17, 25-21. The Cherubims began the tournament with a 21-14, 21-19 win in the opener.

Other matches on day one included Mt Carmel Cavaliers over the Big Red Machine 21-13, 21-14 and the Knights with a pair of wins over the Cavaliers 21-20, 21-17 and the Big Red Machine 21-14, 21-14.

In the playoffs, the Cavaliers advanced to the semifinal with a 21-19, 21-20 win over the Stingrays. They were eliminated by the Cherubims 21-14, 21-14.
