According to police, the murder count is now eight short of last year’s official 111 total after a man was gunned down in a drive-by shooting and one man died in hospital of a shooting injury.

The latest homicide happened around 7:30pm Friday.

Police say a man, with a woman companion, was driving on Carmichael Road west, off the Sir Milo Butler Highway, when the car got a flat tyre, forcing the driver to pull the side of the road.

Two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, approached the driver as he was changing his car’s tyre and shot him twice in the head before disappearing into nearby bushes.

The woman passenger was not hurt, the driver died at the scene.

Although police have not released his identity, The Tribune understands he is Latone Braynen.

Around 5:30am Saturday, police arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with this shooting.

Another man, who was shot earlier this year, died in hospital on Saturday.

Lanero Arlene, 22, was shot on July 21 in Nassau Village.

Anyone with information on any of these murders are asked to contact police at 911, or 919, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS.

(The earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that a man had died from injuries sustained in December.)

I don't care what the official police statistics say, unlawful killing at the point of a gun is UP. Who cares what category you put gun death under - it is sill a death caused by violence and the people of The Bahamas are not stupid. They are however afraid. Government needs to get off its high horse and admit that it does not have a strategy to win the war on crime. The truth is, it never had. Now is the time to get the sharpest minds and the most passionate crime fighters from ALL parties and let's regain our streets.
