THE New Providence Women’s Basketball Association continued its season at the DW Davis Gym Tuesday night with the current league leaders highlighting the night with their seventh consecutive win.

Super Value Cybot

Queens - 68

Defence Force Waves - 31

Two opposite sides of the spectrum were on display as the undefeated league leaders won in blow-out fashion over one of the league’s two winless teams. Tracey Lewis led four Queens in double figures with a game high 20 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Marva Dean finished with a double double (13 points and 12 rebounds), Taneil Poitier made an impact on both ends of the floor with 11 points, seven steals, six assists and five rebounds while Nakya Dean added 10 points off the bench. Keva Barry led the Waves with 15 points and was the only player to reach double figures.

The Queens shot a blistering 53 per cent from the field and dominated the paint with a 22-4 scoring advantage. Super Value got out to an 11-3 lead within the game’s first five minutes and Lewis gave them a 10-point lead with a layup at the 2:29 mark. They led 17-7 at the end of the first quarter and 30-15 at the half. The third was the only period when the Waves scored in double figures with 12, but failed to make a dent in the deficit as the Cybots scored 15. The fourth was all Queens as they outscored the Saints 23-4 and led by as much as 18. The Queens improved to 7-0 while the Waves fell to 0-7.

Johnson’s Lady

Truckers - 60

Dee Saints - 51

The Saints appeared upset-minded, looking to turn their first win of the season into a two-game streak but a fourth quarter fallout saw the Truckers pull ahead late for the win. In the fourth quarter, the Saints saw the deficit balloon from two points to as much as 18.

Latoya Rolle led the way for the Truckers with a near triple double (10 points, 11 rebounds, eight steals and six assists). Glenda Gilcud added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, Valarie Nesbitt added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists and Janice Williams added nine points off the bench. Jakia Brown led the Saints with a game high 22 points, while Alexis Bell added 13 points and Latonia Flowers chipped in with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams shot just 28 per cent from the field and the Saints actually held a three-point advantage at the free throw line, but the Truckers connected on four more three-pointers and scored 25 points off 36 Saints turnovers. Neither team led by more than four points in a closely played first quarter which featured four ties and six lead changes.

Brown came up with a steal and lay-up to just beat the buzzer to force an 18-18 tie at the end of the first. The Truckers opened the second on a 9-2 run to take a seven-point lead when Nesbitt split a pair at the line to make the score 27-20 at 4:58. The Saints ended the quarter on an 8-8 run of their own to pull ahead 28-27 headed into the half after Bell made a pair of free throws with just five seconds left to play.

Three ties and three lead changes in the third as the Truckers won the quarter 15-12 to take a 42-40 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

The Truckers opened the fourth on an 18-4 run to put the game away.

Gilcud scored eight points during the run and assisted on another two baskets during the run which ended with her lay-up with 5:35 left to play, giving her team a 60-44 lead. The Truckers improved to 5-2 while the Saints fell to 1-8.
