St Paul's in 18-5 rout over Golden Gates to win the men's best-of-3 championship

GOLDEN Gates was looking for the hat trick in the Baptist Sports Council’s 2013 Coca-Cola Softball Classic on Saturday, but St Paul’s saved their best game for the last to spoil their much anticipated celebrations.

St Paul’s erupted for an 18-5 rout over Golden Gates in their third and final game in the men’s best-of-three series to bring the curtain down on a long and dramatic championship day in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.

After losing the opener 15-11, St Paul’s rallied to take game two 18-17 to force the deciding game to secure the title as pitcher/first baseman Deval Storr was named the most valuable player after he went 7-for-11 with three runs batted in and seven scored.

Golden Gates also had to go the distance in the co-ed division before they prevailed with a 2-1 decision over St John’s. Golden Gates won game one 18-5, but St John’s bounced back for a 12-10 decision in game two before Golden Gates came back and held on 12-11 for the title. Richard Bain was named the MVP after he went 8-for-12 with three RBI and nine runs scored.

Golden Gates, however, had an easy time in the 19-and-under division as they held off Macedonia 12-11 in game one.
