Next generation of golfers take their first swings

ON Thursday, January 24, the Yellow Elder Primary School made a giant leap by introducing golf in their Physical Education period for sixteen (16) boys and girls ages seven to nine years old.

Donna Lundy, Physical Education instructor and Sherene Grey, Guidance Councilor, are to be commended for accepting the generous offer of Jim Duncombe, resident Pro at the Bahamas Golf Federation (BGF) driving range facility located in the Baillou Hills Sports Complex, to initiate a Golf program at their school.

Yellow Elder Primary is located within walking distance of the BGF Range, which makes it very convenient for the youngsters to walk over. Golf can be the vehicle for many to achieve their goal for a college education and a career in whatever field they envision for themselves once they apply themselves academically and dedicate the practice time to the sport.

As is all other sports, there are “diamonds in the rough” just waiting to be discovered.

“These kids now have the opportunity to participate in a sport that will not only afford them the opportunity to further their education, but to also learn life skills of courtesy, confidence, honesty, integrity, judgement, perseverence, responsibility, respect and sportsmanship,” the BGF released.

“Now that golf is an olympic sport, it’s time to train our youngsters so that we can eventually put the Bahamas in the forefront in yet another sport.”
