IF the closing game of the 2013 Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic can provide anywhere near the excitement of yesterday’s opening game, the 31st edition of the tournament is shaping up to be one of the most exciting tournaments in recent memory.

Teleos Academy

Cherubims – 41

Government High

School Magic – 39

A dominant performance by the Cherubims’ Nathaniel Ferguson was capped by a tip in that just beat the regulation buzzer to give Teleos a win to open the tournament.

Ferguson finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs. His eighth offensive rebound came off an Anton Sturrup miss, which just left of the outstretched arms of a trio of Magic defenders.

Sturrup finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Daron Taylor led the Magic with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Teneas Mackey finished with 11 points.

Tied at 35 late in the fourth quarter, both teams traded baskets in a defensive struggle.

Keith Laing scored his only basket of the game to tie the game at 39 with 2:17 left to play.

The Magic took an early lead, but both teams took an 11 all tie in the second quarter.

Taylor led the Magic on a 7-0 run that saw them take a 25-19 lead into the half.

In the third quarter, the Cherubims’ fullcourt trap began to expose the Magic ballhandling issues and opened the quarter with a run of their own.

Ferguson capped an 8-2 run for Teleos and tied the game at 27 with a runner. He gave Teleos their first lead of the second half just two plays later and took a 34-33 lead into the fourth.

Teleos outrebounded GHS 42-23, which offset their terrible shooting from the field at just 26 per cent. They shot just 12-46 from the field, but took 30 trips to the foul line where they made 16 while the Magic made just three.

The game featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes, and Teleos never led by more than three points. They will advance to face the winners of the CI Gibson/Temple Christian matchup.

Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves – 51

Aquinas College Aces – 30

It took a while for the Timberwolves to assert their dominance, but any thoughts of an Aces upset were quickly halted in the third quarter.

Anatol Rodgers led by just three at the half, but outscored Aquinas 20-6 in the third quarter to take control for the remainder of the game.

Marvin Josey and Kyle Wilson finished with 10 points apiece, Trevad Thurston finished with nine points, six steals and five rebounds while Jordan Wilson added four points and eight rebounds.

Joshua Murray led the Aces with 10 points and six rebounds and Kenton Dawkins added eight points.

The Aces scored first off the opening tip, and led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Timberwolves took their first lead of the game on a Thurston layup for a 13-12 advantage.

With a three-pointer and layup just before the buzzer, the

Timberwolves led 19-16 at the half, before their third quarter sealed the win and trip to the next round.

Four consecutive turnovers in the quarter saw the Timberwolves go ahead by double figures for the first time, 28-18 on a Thurston layup.

In the fourth, the Timberwolves led by as much as 23 on a jumper from Dennis Brown.

The Timberwolves advanced to face the winner of last night’s CR Walker/Queen’s College matchup.
