It was a busy day four in the 2013 Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic which featured an early start and the first round of eliminations in this year’s tournament.

Temple Christian Suns - 36

Government High Magic – 33

The Magic were the first casualty of the tournament after the Suns overcame a 10-point second half deficit to stay alive.

Midway through the third quarter, the Magic took a 24-14 lead on an Earnest Strachan layup, but the Suns would respond and close out the period strong to stay in contention. They ended the quarter on a scoring stretch that extended to the beginning of the fourth, an 11-0 run, capped by a Sebrin Brooks layup for a 25-24 lead.

Trailing 33-31 with just over 30 seconds left to play, the Magic’s Daron Taylor was fouled on his way to the basket following a steal, but missed a pair at the line with an opportunity to tie.

The Suns made enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win, sealed my Dylon Musgrove’s offensive rebound and putback on their final possession.

Musgrove finished with a game high 13 points and six rebounds while Darren Symonette added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Taylor and Taneas Mackey led the Magic with seven points apiece while Strachan added six points and eight rebounds.

The Suns were able to overcome a horrendous first half where they surrendered 18 turnovers.

The Magic took an early 7-0 lead, led 11-2 at the end of the first quarter and 16-10 at the half.

Both teams shot 33 per cent from the field, but the Suns made five more shots at the free throw line with Musgrove leading the way at 63 per cent, 7-11.

The Suns advanced and are slated to face the Sunland Baptist Stingers 3pm today.

CR Walker Knights – 46

Aquinas College Aces – 30

The GSSSA champions struggled for much of the contest and escaped with the win despite not leading by double figures until late in the fourth quarter.

The Aces made it interesting for nearly three and-a-half quarters before the Knights pulled away behind Joseph Roberts’ eight points in the period. He finished with 13 points, a game high 11 rebounds and three steals.

Van Hutchinson added a game high 15 points and seven rebounds, while Shaquille Outten added 11 points and three steals.

Kristian Martinez led the Aces with 13 points and six rebounds.

Tied at nine after the first quarter, the Knights ended the second on an 8-0 run and took a 21-13 lead into the half.

The Knights shot 16/43 from the field but held a 12 rebound advantage on the boards.

Agape Christian Eagles – 56

Bishop Michael Eldon Warriors - 34

The Eagles moved to 2-0 with another dominant performance, making for a less than stellar tournament debut for the Warriors.

The top shooting team in the tournament continued to roll led by Agassi Saunders who finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Godfrey Rolle added 10 points, Jaron Cornish chipped in with eight points while Oswald Parker added six points, 13 rebounds and three blocks.

The Warriors were paced by Khalil Russell’s 13 points.
