88 Haitians held by RBDF

THE 88 Haitian migrants detained in two separate incidents this week have been transferred to New Providence for processing, the Defence Force reported yesterday.

In a joint effort between Immigration officials, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and police officers on Cat Island, 46 migrants were apprehended off Port Howe after their vessel ran aground on Sunday.

They are currently being detained at the Carmichael Road Detention Center, the Defence Force said.

The second apprehension was made shortly after 7pm on Monday when the Defence Force patrol craft HMBS P-45, under the command of Sub Lieutenant Alexis Brown, intercepted a 30-ft Haitian sloop about three miles west of Hawksbill Rock in the Exuma chain.

On board were 42 Haitians – 29 men, 11 women and two children).

“The migrants were removed from their unsanitary vessel, taken aboard HMBS P-45, and brought into the Defence Force Base shortly after 10am Tuesday morning. They were then turned over to Immigration officials for further processing,” a Defence Force statement said.
